1.  This contest is open to any student in a Roslyn or North Shore-area high school in grades 9-12 during the Fall 2007 semester. 

2.  Each contest entry will consist of a presentation which runs as a slide show in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 or an earlier version. The topic of the presentation must focus on some aspect of the history of Roslyn and/or the North Shore and the importance of historic preservation in the local community. The target audience is Roslyn area high school students; i.e. the peers of the participants. 

The topic must cover history that occurred at least 50 years ago or earlier (prior to 1957).  The topic of the presentation must be in one of the following categories:            
- a local person or group of people of historical interest            

- a local building or site of historical interest

- an event which was significant in Roslyn or the North Shore's history.

Some sample ideas for projects are:      

- the early settlement of Roslyn and/or  Long Island’s North Shore              

- the American Revolution around Roslyn or on Long Island

- a person from Roslyn and or the North Shore area who was a national figure or        
made national news (For example: William Cullen Bryant, Clarence Mackay, Childs Frick, etc.)

- the development of surrounding neighborhoods such as Roslyn Heights, Sea Cliff, Roslyn Estates, Glen Head

- a local mystery or ghost story and the people/places associated with it

- an architect and the building(s) she/he designed in and around Roslyn

3.  Projects may not be done with any professional help except guidance from the current history or computer teacher of the participant(s).  Each project must include the name of the history or computer teacher in the students’ high school who will certify that the project is solely the work of the student submitting that project to the contest.

4.  Participants are required to indicate their intention to participate in the contest by submitting a letter of intent to roslynlandmarks@verizon.net.  Each individual student will submit one intent letter.  Letters of intent must include the student’s full name, address and email address as well as the name of the sponsoring teacher, class and the proposed topic and/or title of the presentation.  The entry form may be mailed to the Roslyn Landmark Society at Post Office Box 234, Roslyn or may be sent electronically by 12:00 midnight CDT on Friday, November 17 tomailto:toroslynlandmarks@verizon.net .

5.  All participants are responsible for all project expenses.

6. Projects may be submitted on a standard CD mailed to Roslyn Landmark Society, P.O. Box 234, Roslyn, NY 11576. Projects which are mailed must be postmarked by December 14, 2007.  Electronic submissions must be sent to roslynlandmarks@verizon.net  and will be automatically dated and time stamped. Electronic submissions must be received by 12:00 midnight, December 14, 2007.  Participants will receive confirmation that their projects were received.  No late entries will be accepted. Winners will be announced by January 25 and awards presented on February 28.

7.  All projects must be created in and run as a slide show in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 or an earlier version.  The presentation must not exceed 25 slides and cannot run longer than 5 minutes.  All projects must include as the first slide a title page listing the name of the participant, the name of the high school, the name of the high school teacher who certifies the project as the exclusive work of the participants, and the city and county in which the school is located.  The next to the last slide of each presentation must include credits for the source of any image, sound or text quotation used from an outside source.  The final slide of each presentation must list references used in researching the topic, including publications, web sites and local history collections.

8.  All projects become the property of the Roslyn Landmark Society and may be made available to the public on the organization’s web site. 9.  Winners will be selected in the following categories and receive the award shown:      

First Place                         $1,250 award                        $250 award to teacher
Second Place                       $850 award                        $150 award to teacher
Third Place                           $400 award                        $100 award to teacher

10.  The Roslyn Landmark Society will have sole responsibility for appointing the panel of judges for the contest.  All decisions of the panel are final.

11. Student winners will be notified by email; their high school principals will also be notified.  Winners will be invited to an awards presentation on a date to be announced.
