The “Old Brick” house was built originally in 1820 for Samuel Titus IV. It was one of the first brick houses on Long Island. The residence was the center of the Willets farm and home of Robert H. Willets, the first mayor of East Hills. The property was purchased in 1929 by James Forrestal, the first U.S. Secretary of Defense (1947-1949). Forrestal lived in Old Brick until his death in 1949.

As seen in this 1906 Belcher-Hyde map, Old Brick was on the property of Phebe Taber Willets.

The renovated Old Brick as seen in 1955.

Carole and I were married in June of 1969 and rented an apartment from the Gammons family from 5/69 until about 4/72. I just finished reading “The Gold Coast” by Nelson DeMille. Brought back a lot of memories.
