We are pleased to announce that the Roslyn Landmark Society has received a $1,600 Gardiner Young Scholars award from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation and that our student nominees, Isabella Carlese and Sophia Lian, will both serve as Gardiner Young Scholars in 2024!
The Gardiner Young Scholars award is an opportunity open to all Long Island historical societies. Candidates must be between the ages of 15-22 and are selected at the discretion of the historical organization that oversees the scholars’ hours and activities.
In 2023, the Roslyn Landmark Society nominated Isabella Santos, a junior at Roslyn High School, who led the Roslyn High School Art Club in an exciting project to create temporary decorative window coverings for the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge.
Riley Danbusky, a Roslyn High School sophomore, organized a wildly successful historic Scavenger Hunt as Roslyn Landmark Society’s Gardiner Young Scholar in 2022.
As our 2024 Gardiner Young Scholars, Isabella Carlese and Sophia Lian will split the award and each complete 50 hours of internship service with the Roslyn Landmark Society.
Isabella Carlese will be a senior at Roslyn High School in the fall. As an AP student, she has studied art history and has a deep appreciation of the historical architecture, structures, and monuments located in and around Roslyn.
Isabella spent her summers as a freshman and sophomore volunteering at the Roslyn Landmark Society, where she worked with archival documents and photograph collections. As a 2024 Gardiner Young Scholar, she will concentrate on projects that will enable wider accessibility to the organization’s archival collections.
Sophia Lian will be a senior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick in the fall. She is also an AP student, with a strong interest in the fields of history and psychology. Since February 2024, Sophia has volunteered with the Roslyn Landmark Society as a Social Media intern, conducting historical research and writing short articles highlighting Roslyn's history.
As a 2024 Gardiner Young Scholar, Sophia will serve as our inaugural “Young Historian” in a new collaboration between the Roslyn Landmark Society and Blank Slate Media (now part of Schneps Media). Through this partnership, Sophia’s articles will be published in the Roslyn News Times as well as on the Roslyn Landmark Society’s website and social media channels.
Congratulations again to Isabella and Sophia for their 2024 appointments as the Roslyn Landmark Society’s Gardiner Young Scholars. Special thanks also to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for facilitating this advantageous learning opportunity for our local students.
