We are pleased to announce that the Roslyn Landmark Society has received a $1,600 Gardiner Young Scholars award from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation and that two of our local student nominees, Sydney Spier and Caroline Danbusky, will serve as Gardiner Young Scholars in 2025.
The Gardiner Young Scholars award is an opportunity open to all Long Island historical societies. Candidates must be between the ages of 15-22 and are selected at the discretion of the historical organization that oversees the scholars’ hours and activities.
As our 2025 Gardiner Young Scholars, Sydney and Caroline will split the award and each complete 50 hours of internship service with the Roslyn Landmark Society.
Caroline Danbusky resides in the historic Village of Roslyn and will be a senior at Roslyn High School during the 2025-2026 academic year. Caroline served as a Roslyn Landmark Society volunteer in 2023, digitizing archival slides and assisting with the Society's Historic Scavenger Hunt. As a 2025 Young Scholar, she will continue her work digitizing slides to help create public access to currently inaccessible historic images.
Sydney Spier will also be a senior at Roslyn High School during the 2025-2026 school year. Sydney is an extremely accomplished student with a deep appreciation of history. She enjoys researching the stories behind landmarks, people, and events that shaped the Roslyn area, and in 2024 she created a podcast to explore historical topics and foster a wider appreciation of local history.
As a Gardiner Young Scholar, Sydney will serve as the Society’s newest “Young Historian” in a collaboration between the Roslyn Landmark Society and Blank Slate Media (now part of Schneps Media). Through this partnership, Sydney will conduct research and write brief history articles that will be simultaneously published on the Society’s website, in the Roslyn News-Times, and on Schneps Media’s digital platform, longislandpress.com.
Congratulations again to Sydney and Caroline for their 2025 appointments as the Roslyn Landmark Society’s Gardiner Young Scholars. Special thanks also to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for facilitating this advantageous learning opportunity for our local students!
