•The 46-acre property in Roslyn was originally owned by early settlers of Long Island –the related Taber and Willets families.

•Between 1905 and 1916, stockbroker Charles Crooke Auchincloss purchased the property. This 25-room Georgian Revival mansion was built around 1916 by the firm of Peabody, Wilson and Brown and named Builtover by Auchincloss.

•Olmstead Brothers, the same firm that designed Central Park, were the architects for the grounds in 1917.

•1942: 13-year old Jacqueline “Jackie” Bouvier, our future First Lady, visited her friend and classmate Rosie Lee, Charles Crooke Auchincloss’ granddaughter, at Builtover. Jackie’s mother Janet Lee Bouvier would later marry into the Auchincloss family. Previous articles about the estate have often confused Charles’ brother Dr. Hugh Dudley Auchincloss (1878-1947) with his cousin Hugh Dudley Auchincloss (1858-1913) and his son Hugh Dudley “Hugh-D” Auchincloss II (1897-1976). It was Hugh-D. who married Janet Lee Bouvier (Jacqueline’s mother) in 1942.

•1946: Dr. Daniel Twohig purchased the estate from the Auchincloss family. Dr. Twohig renamed the mansion My Beloved. The property was reduced in size.

•1966: Nellie McCory purchased the 2.5 acre estate and renamed it Whispered Wishes after a poem by her daughter.

•1983: North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center purchased the property.

•2017: Mary Jo Balkind, granddaughter of Charles Crooke Auchincloss, returned to visit Builtover, where she lived with her grandparents, mother, two sisters and one brother during World War II.

The 85-acre property was owned by Martha Taber Willets in 1876. Between 1905 and 1916, Charles Crooke Auchincloss purchased at least 46 acres from the Willets family.
