The East Hills Elementary School was built by the Roslyn Union Free School District as one of four new elementary schools during the baby-boom era, opening in 1953. The school was designed by the Manhattan-based firm of Moore & Hutchins.

Out of the three schools built as part of this project (the other two being the former, Moore & Hutchins-designed Roslyn–Flower Hill and Highland Schools in Flower Hill and Roslyn Estates, respectively), East Hills was, by far, the largest.

The lot which the school was built on was purchased by the district after voters approved of a 1948 referendum vote, during which the majority of Roslyn's voters voted in favor of the school district making the land purchases for all three of these schools. The construction of East Hills was approved by Roslyn taxpayers during a referendum vote in 1949.

During the Cold War, the school was one of many on Long Island to feature a fallout shelter.

The school received an extensive renovation in the 2010s.

The Library of Congress maintains a number of public domain photographs of the school which were taken shortly after its opening; these photographs are part of the Gottscho-Schleisner Collection.
