According to "The Valentines in America" by T.W. Valentine (Clark & Maynard, N.Y., 1874), Roslyn resident William and Phebe Valentine produced nine children, seven of whom were boys. Two of them died in infancy. The eldest son James J. M. Valentine was born in New York March 6, 1807. He studied law with Caleb S. Woodhull, of New York (who afterwards became Mayor of New York City from 19849-1851), and finally entered into partnership with him. He was one of the sachems (leader) of the Tammany Society and was elected to represent New York City in the legislature in 1835. After being married in 1831, his wife died four years later. Valentine died on December 10, 1845 at the age of 38, leaving two daughters-Lenora and Sarah J.

This house was built for Valentine around 1840. The original house was a 2 ½ story center hall building over a full basement. The foundations were originally made from bricks. The pitched roof wing was raised one story and remodeled to provide kitchen space adjacent to the original dinning room. The first kitchen could have been in a separate building or in the cellar. The porch was possibly original and later remodeled and bracketed. The barn in the rear dates back to 1870

Reading the Valentine house brochure contributors list brought great memories of village families and preservation society members of the 60s.
