The North Hempstead Country Club opened in 1916, built in part over the Burtis family’s farm. Featuring an 18-hole golf course designed by A.W. Tillinghast and a clubhouse designed by Clifford C. Wendehack, it is the only country club located in Flower Hill and predates the village’s incorporation by 15 years.
The course’s layout was altered in the 1956 due to sand mining operations in the area; the redesigned course was designed by Robert Trent Jones; the alteration saw holes 11-13, 16, and 17 be reconfigured to allow for the sand mining operations to take place.
In 1968, a small airplane performed an emergency landing on the golf course after its engine failed over Manhasset Bay. Despite the Piper PA-28-140 having its front landing gear collapse upon landing, there were no injuries.
In the 1990s, the golf course was restored to the original Tillinghast design during a renovation project, taking place between 1994 and 1996.
A driving range opened in the late 2010s over the site of the former A. Wright Chapman Home.
