Roslyn Middle School

Roslyn Middle School opened in 1957 as Roslyn Junior High School. It was built by the Roslyn Union Free School District as a result the population explosion which took place in Roslyn during the baby-boom era.

The building was designed by the Manhattan-based architectural firm of Moore & Hutchins, which also designed the 1950s expansion of Roslyn High School (which was constructed as part of the same proposition), the East Hills Elementary School, and the former Highland and Roslyn–Flower Hill Elementary Schools.

In September 1957, during the first few days of the school’s operations, Sid Solomon, the commander of the James A. Lyons Legion Post 122, presented the school with an American flag, which was ceremoniously handed to principal Thomas N. Robinson.

During the Cold War, the school was one of many on Long Island to feature a fallout shelter.

In 1987, Roslyn Junior High School became Roslyn Middle School.

The school was expanded and renovated in the early 2000s.

Roslyn Middle School is unique as it is Roslyn’s only school located south of the Long Island Expressway. The Long Island Expressway was built through the area along the path of Powerhouse Road (which was designated NY-25D) only a couple of years after the school was built, opening on September 29, 1959 between Willis Avenue and Glen Cove Road. Its construction caused many parents to grow concerned over the safety of children walking to school on Locust Lane underneath the overpass.
