On April 9th, restoration carpenter Mike Cotroneo made his first delivery of custom-milled trim to the Grist Mill site, a tangible milestone in the ongoing exterior restoration.
The trim was milled from reclaimed old-growth yellow pine, and the end grain tells the story plainly: the growth rings visible in the images are so tight and numerous they are nearly impossible to count, the signature of timber that grew slowly over centuries before modern forestry practices made such density a rarity. Old-growth yellow pine of this quality is exceptionally dense and resinous, far more resistant to rot, insects, and weathering than the fast-grown lumber available today, which makes it not just a historically appropriate choice but a structurally superior one. Cotroneo milled the trim to match the profiles and construction techniques original to the Roslyn Grist Mill.
Work is set to begin at the end of April to prepare and clean the site for installation in early June.
