The Van Nostrand-Starkins House has stood at the heart of Roslyn since around 1680, making it one of the oldest surviving structures on Long Island. This winter, a burst pipe caused significant flooding throughout the building, damaging original flooring that has been in place for centuries and threatening the structure's integrity, and we are hoping that your donation can help us restore this historic building.
Returning the building to stable condition will require significant work throughout, and the costs are beyond what Roslyn Landmark Society can absorb on its own. The Van Nostrand-Starkins House is a rare, largely intact example of seventeenth-century domestic life on Long Island, and it belongs to this community. Every dollar raised here goes directly toward the recovery of this important building.
As the country marks its 250th anniversary, there's particular weight to the question of what we've managed to hold onto. The Van Nostrand-Starkins House was already nearly a century old when the Revolution began, and preserving it now is both an act of repair and a reminder that the history we inherit is only as lasting as our willingness to protect it.
We invite you to join the hundreds of neighbors who have already joined the Roslyn Landmark Society to ensure Roslyn remains a vibrant window into the past. Your support ensures that the legacy of those who built this community remains standing for those who will inherit it.
