In 1925 banker and financier Percy Rivington Pyne II (1882-1950) purchased 69 acres in Roslyn Harbor and commissioned the prominent architectural firm of Cross & Cross to design a 15,390 square foot Georgian Revival country house, gatehouse, bathing pavilion and gazebo.
Pyne’s grandfather was Moses Taylor, director and president of City Bank of New York, which later became Citibank, and had a controlling interest in Consolidated Gas Co., now known as ConEd. His mother was a direct descendant of Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Cross & Cross were the designers of the General Electric and Tiffany & Co. buildings in Manhattan, Yale School of Music and John Mackay III’s Happy House in Roslyn (now East Hills).
The estate had extensive landscaping consisting of a farm complex, annual garden, swimming pool, fencing, trellis screening, finials, pot stands, and plantings by Beatrix Jones Farrand from 1926-1929. It also featured later landscaping designs by James Leal Greenleaf.
The original estate was subdivided in 1945 with the last parcel sold in 1951. The country home is still standing on 3.9 acres with an easement entrance on Dogwood Avenue.
The gatehouse is also still standing on Bryant Avenue and has been converted into a private residence.

Wonderful spread on this historic house, both original and now. The lines of the house look superior in Cross' drawings and earlier photographs, before all the ivy. Besides Cross the distinguished names of the garden designers is impressive. If you haven't already notified East Hills and the agent of this material, I strongly recommend it.
