The Roslyn Landmark Society is proud to share an exciting milestone in the ongoing restoration of the historic Roslyn Grist Mill: the installation of the building’s new cedar shingle roof is now complete.
Standing at the heart of Roslyn for more than three centuries, the Grist Mill is one of the region’s most significant surviving examples of early American architecture. Its restoration requires thoughtful craftsmanship, traditional materials, and unwavering dedication — and the completion of the cedar roof marks another major step toward bringing this rare landmark back to life.
Crafted in the style and material true to the building’s 18th-century origins, the new cedar shingle roof not only protects the structure for generations to come but also restores the Mill’s historic silhouette. This phase follows the extensive work completed on the timber frame, which now once again supports the building as it did centuries ago.
Completion of the roof brings the project closer to its ultimate goal: transforming the Roslyn Grist Mill into a fully interpreted educational site that will welcome the public for programs, tours, and a deeper exploration of Roslyn’s remarkable past.
This progress would not be possible without the support of our partners in government, foundations, restoration professionals, and the many Roslyn Landmark Society members whose generosity continues to move this project forward. Each milestone like this roof brings us one step nearer to reopening the Grist Mill and sharing its extraordinary history with the community.

We look forward to sharing updates as work continues, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to the community for standing with us in preserving Roslyn’s legacy.
