One of the earliest surveys of Hempstead Harbor and Roslyn was this 1937 survey conducted by the U.S. Coast Survey Office. Considered the nation's first scientific agency, it was established on February 10,1807 when President Thomas Jefferson signed "An Act for surveying the coasts of the United States." Currently the renamed Office of Coast Survey is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It continues to be the official chartmaker of the United States.

The Roslyn Grist Mill and Hendrick Onderdonk's house were two of only five buildings located on the Milldam (later Old Northern Boulevard). The Millpond was later renamed Silver Lake.
