Join Craig Westergard, Roslyn Landmark Society Trustee, for a Spring Walking Tour of the Village of Roslyn’s historic sites. This year's tours will include locations along Main Street, Old Northern Blvd., and East Broadway.
The tour will focus on the development of Roslyn between 1650 through the twentieth century. The development of a small colonial village to a thriving community is a testament to Roslyn’s historical significance and its role in shaping Long Island's identity. Important figures such as Hendrick Onderdonk, William Valentine, Henry Eastman, the Hicks family, and their contributions and building structures will be discussed.
The tour groups will first explore the early Main Street District, Ward Memorial Clock Tower, Onderdonk House, Roslyn Grist Mill, and Mill Dam. They will continue down Old Northern Blvd. and discuss the former Saw Mill and Lumber Yard, as well as the current Roslyn Savings Bank. Following this, they will head down East Broadway and look at various historic residences including the former and current Presbyterian Church.
The tour will then continue to the Valentine House on Paper Mill Road where participants will enter the building and briefly discuss William Valentine, his achievements, the War Memorial, and development of the Bryant Library. The groups will finally traverse the Roslyn Duck Pond, view the former Paper Mill (reproduction), and proceed to the 1680 Van Nostrand-Starkins House if time permits.
Each tour will last approximately 1-2 hours, so please be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Attendees, please gather at the George Allen Tenant House located at 36 Main Street in Roslyn.
Tickets are free for current 2025 Roslyn Landmark Society members and a suggested $25 for non-members (which will include a 2025 membership).
