Recently uncovered by incoming Co-President Jordan Fensterman, this 1913 official announcement for the First Annual Spring Clean Up of Roslyn is a delightful reminder that the urge to tidy up the Village is anything but new.
Organized by the Village Improvement Society and scheduled for "Tuesday, March 25th, or the first fine day thereafter," the cleanup promised a wagon sent around free of charge to collect rubbish, provided residents had their things ready beforehand ("the man cannot wait as he has a long way to travel"), kept their swill out of it, and notified their nearest Boy Scout to ensure they weren't overlooked.
More than 110 years later, with a warm weekend ahead and that same collective restlessness that arrives every spring, it's reassuring to know that the people of Roslyn have always felt the exact same urge to haul things to the curb, shake off winter, and agree that this is the year things will be cleaner and better. The impulse to spruce up the Village is apparently as old as the Village itself!
