On July 25, 2023, the Roslyn Landmark Society, local officials and supporters celebrated the conclusion of Phase 1 of the restoration of the Roslyn Grist Mill. The mill was lowered onto its new foundation, supported by its restored historic timber frame.
Here are highlights from the presentation by Howard Kroplick, Roslyn Landmark Society's Co-President.
“They say it takes a village to raise a child,” Kroplick said, “Well it takes a great community to raise and lower a grist mill.”
In December 2021, Howard and Roz Kroplick generously launched "The Roslyn Grist Mill Million Dollar Match Challenge." All grants, awards, dues from members and sponsor contributions, and grants were trebly matched up to one million dollars. By it's conclusion in December 2022, Howard and Roz raised over $1.64 million!
“Roz and I are extremely proud of the wonderful support given to the Roslyn Landmark Society and pleased that the Roslyn Grist Mill Million Dollar Match Challenge was successfully met,” said Howard Kroplick.
Nassau County Legislator, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, had this to say about Howard and his wife Roz.
"But what it [The Roslyn Grist Mill Restoration Project] really is, it's the heart and soul of this man right here, Howard and Roz Kroplick. It takes someone who loves it. This man puts his heart and soul into everything with his beautiful wife. We need that one person to really push and you have pushed from day one. You're a pleasure to work with, you make it fun. And if it was not for you, this would not be happening, I have no doubt. So, I thank you."
Councilman Peter J. Zuckerman of North Hempstead's 2nd District added:
"One thing I want to tell you about Howard is this guy is relentless. As a historian for the Town of North Hempstead, talk about someone giving 110%. Howard is just amazing and his wife Roz."
