Last month, the deed to the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge was transferred to the Village of East Hills by the developer of the six lots surrounding this historic structure. On Tuesday, January 25, 2022, restoration of the Gate lodge property began with the removal of debris, trees and bushes.
Designed in 1899 by Stanford White, part of the prominent McKim, Mead and White architectural firm, the gate lodge was the entrance to Clarence Mackay Harbor Hill estate.
For the first time in over 30 years, the front of the gate lodge and the limestone walls can be seen unobstructed from Harbor Hill Road and Roslyn Road. Restoration will continue through 2022.
Kudos to Mayor Michael Koblenz, Village Attorney Bill Burton and the Village of East Hills Planning Board for their efforts in preserving what Dr. Roger Gerry in 1983 considered " the most historically significant building in East Hills."

BRAVO! Preservation is alive and well on long island if you look for it and have caring people who are sincere about what "happened then" so future generations can embrace that heritage. Having been involved in many decades of the research and preservation and sharing of local as well as automotive history , seeing this brings great joy and should be an inspiration to all communities to take action while they still can! With utmost respect and thanks.
