On May 14, 2024, Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation Trustees, Robert J. Watkins and Lynne C. Nowak, along with the foundation’s Executive Director, Kathryn Curran, visited the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge and Roslyn Grist Mill to meet with Roslyn Landmark Society’s leadership and staff. Roslyn Landmark Society's Co-President, Howard Kroplick, led the group on a tour of both historic sites to provide updates on the progress of each project and discuss exciting plans for the future.
The Roslyn Landmark Society received a $69,599 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation in 2023 to replace the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge’s historic windows and doors as part of the Gilded Age-era structure’s ongoing restoration. The goal of the restoration effort is to return the Gate Lodge to its original appearance and repurpose it into a history education center in partnership with the Roslyn School District.
The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation has also provided generous grant support for the Roslyn Grist Mill’s restoration, with awards to the Roslyn Landmark Society in 2019 for $100,000 and 2022 for $420,776. Additionally, the foundation sponsored two Gardiner Young Scholars Program interns for the Roslyn Landmark Society in 2022 and 2023.
The Landmark Society was also one of three Long Island historical societies that received the first non-matching grants made by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation when it was awarded $10,000 to restore the historic Townsend Cemetery in East Hills in 2021.
The Roslyn Landmark Society wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for its continued support of the organization's efforts to preserve and restore historically significant sites in the Roslyn area.
