The timber framing crew from Vermont was back on-site at the Roslyn Grist Mill last week to replace the mill's truncated lower tie beam #13. This type of beam is a horizontal joist that is used to "tie" or connect a building's columns together and keep them upright. The mill's lower tie beam #13 helps support the structure and takes the load off its walls by making it more rigid and providing lateral stability.
The crew worked hard to remove the lower tie beam and hand hew the new white oak timber for replacement. They are expected to be back on-site in September to begin the roof structural work.
