The Town of North Hempstead recently began restoration work at the Hicks Memorial Center in Gerry Pond Park in Roslyn. Initial work includes cleaning the bridge and removing some of the bridge's stones to replicate them.
A bronze plaque created by sculptor David Evans in 1930 was placed on the stone bridge in 1930 to honor Henry Bergh, founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The plaque was stolen before 1990 and never replaced. The Gerry Charitable Trust awarded the Town of North Hempstead a $25,000 grant to have a replica of the original Bergh plaque created in 2017, which the Town of North Hempstead plans to reinstall once a restoration of the memorial center is complete.
