This Dutch Colonial house was once the home to noted American author, Christopher Morley, the writer of more than 50 novels who purchased the home he called Green Escape in 1920. His work, Thunder on the Left, is set in this house while Where the Blue Begins and The Man Who Made Friends with Himself utilize the surrounding Roslyn Estates.
Morley was the second owner of the ca. 1912 house and it was he who installed the Latin phrases carved on the top of the wooden book cases running along one side of the den. Loosely translated, they remind visitors that "here he toils but not in vain" and to "be constant in the library, a place of paradise." The side tower with its bay windows is an unusual feature for Dutch Colonial houses. Inside, visitors will find many original details and features including a charming beamed ceiling in the living and dining rooms, oak floors, pocket doors, and a stone fireplace
Sadly, Green Escape was demolished in 2011.
