For several years in the early 1950s, the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge was converted into a small home for a young architect Robert L. Zion (1921-2000). Zion soon joined the prestigious firm of I.M. Pei, Architect. In 1957, he formed Zion and Breen Associates, Inc. He was later commissioned to create Paley Park in 1967, the first “vest-pocket” park in the city, which was so successful that mini-parks became a standard part of the City Plan.
Zion's firm completed work for the Museum of Modern Art, Princeton, and Yale. Notable projects include the Philip Morris Corporate Offices; Liberty State Park; Cincinnati Riverfront Park; and the IBM World Headquarters Atrium.
It is ironic that the former residence of the "father of the min-park" is being restored to eventually become an East Hills mini-park.
These photos of the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge from 1950 to 1953 were donated by Zion to the Roslyn Landmark Society.
Zion landscaped the property.
