A distinctive garden architectural trellis known for its cathedral shape in neo-classical Hollywood style sits on the grounds of the Nassau County Museum of Fine Arts in Roslyn. Henry O' Milliken and Newton P. Bevin designed the Milliken-Bevin Trellis in 1931. Dr. Roger Gerry and his wife, Peggy, who were interested in ornamental structures, saw the structure as one worth restoring. Dr. Gerry described it as “just a beautiful design” and something rare in America, improbable of being replicated.
Gerry played a crucial role in organizing and funding the Milliken-Bevin Trellis restoration. The Roslyn Landmark Society donated $50,000 in support of the restoration effort of the trellis, which had caught the attention of many experts.
The wooden trellis consists of basketweave latticework designs that come together at the dome top. However, the slats of the structure started to fall apart due to environmental influences over the years. The Gerrys' efforts in slowing down the deterioration of the trellis gave the structure a renewed look through the restoration, which was completed in 1990.

The trellis is one of my favorite things to see on when I visit the Nassau County Museum of Art. I walk the grounds often and enjoy the beauty of the gardens around the trellis. Great spot to read or have a quiet moment.
