Thanks to a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts, Roslyn Landmark Society has completed the instillation of newly fabricated historic doors at the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge, marking another important milestone in the restoration of this landmark structure.
The doors are historically referenced, and period accurate recreations, and were custom manufactured by Northwood Sash and Joinery, specialists in traditional craftsmanship and historic millwork. They worked with architect John Collins on their design which reflects the Gate Lodge’s original character, with solid proportions, restrained detailing, and materials chosen to match the scale and architectural intent of the building. The doors restore a sense of balance and presence to the façade, reinforcing the Gate Lodge’s role as a formal and functional entry point.
Installation was completed by Island Contracting, led by Roslyn Landmark Society Co-President John Santos, whose firm has extensive experience in historic restoration. The doors were mounted using historically appropriate hardware, ensuring both structural integrity and visual accuracy.
With the doors now in place, the Gate Lodge once again conveys the craftsmanship and architectural clarity that defined its original construction. This milestone reflects the careful research, skilled workmanship, and collaborative effort guiding the restoration, as the Society continues moving toward the full rehabilitation of this historic landmark.
