Roslyn Mystery Foto Solved: The Thomas Clapham House in Roslyn Harbor, home of Pierre Cartier from 1936 to 1944

Scan 0003

Last week, Pamela Balodimas went on an orientation tour of Cartier's on Fifth Avenue prior to be starting her new job as a regional high jewelry gemologist. She learned that Pierre Cartier (1878-1964) was a member of the prominent family of French jewelers and the founder of Cartier's on Fifth Avenue.

Surprisingly, the presentation noted that one of Cartier's residences was located in Roslyn Harbor from approximately 1936 to 1944. No other details or its exact location were provided. Pam contacted the Roslyn Landmark Society looking for more information on Cartier's Roslyn home.

Question of the week (8/27/2021): Where did Pierre Cartier and his family live in Roslyn Harbor?

Hint: The answer lies within the resources presented in the News and Profile section of this website and the below articles.

Congratulations to Susan Tiffen and Al Velocci for solving the Mystery Foto: The Cartier family lived at the Thomas Clapham House, located at 48 Glenwood Road in Roslyn Harbor.

Interesting...... Nice that these illustrious homes are still standing. Hopefully, Hempstead Harbor will not someday , be surrounded by condos or apartment buildings.

Yes, the mansion is still standing but on a much smaller footprint.

Howard, Cartier's 19 plus acres estate on Hempstead Harbor, was bound on the north by Mott's Cove. It was built by Thomas Clapham, an old sea captain, pre 1900 and in style of a castle containing 35 rooms and said to be the truest castle on Long Island. Cartier paid $125,000 for it and after being unoccupied for several years, it was purchased by Mrs. Sarah H. Wider Hughes for less than $50,000 in 1944

Left my comment on the page with the 1939 Property Ownership map. The Cartier property is on the west side of Engineers Country Club and on North Hempstead Harbor. The Swan Cub would be just north of it. The number 85 (?)is in the road on the map-hard to read.
