This summer, paranormal investigators Matthew Haas of Haasonelli Paranormal spent an evening inside the Van Nostrand-Starkins House, the oldest house in Nassau County, with a bag full of equipment and an open mind. Most of the night was quiet, but not all of it! A bell device designed to respond to changes in its surroundings went off several times in the room beside the bed with no one inside, and a motion and temperature-sensing device placed on the bed itself triggered more than once without explanation. Their meters also lit up near the furniture that holds pieces from the Society’s collection, and two meters set on the bed went off at the same moment, again and again. Matt’s verdict: “Something is up with that bed!”
Whether the house has company or simply a long memory, it is still standing after more than three centuries and still needs care. If you’d like to help with its recovery from this year’s water damage, you can give to the restoration campaign, or stop by Sweet Harbor Coffee on November 6, when proceeds from a special coffee will go to the house.
Happy Halloween from the Roslyn Landmark Society.
