Thank you to all our members and friends who joined us this past Saturday, September 27 for the "Metamorphosis: Trellis & Garden Benefit" at the Nassau County Museum of Art. Funds raised during this collaborative event between the Roslyn Landmark Society and Nassau County Museum of Art will be used to support the restoration of the historic Milliken-Bevin Trellis and renovation of the surrounding formal garden located on the museum's grounds.
The Milliken-Bevin Trellis was designed in 1931 by architects Henry O. Milliken and Newton P. Bevin, of the New York architecture firm Milliken & Bevin. It is recognized as one of the most unique examples of garden architecture in America and was last restored in 1990 under the guidance of Dr. Roger Gerry, co-founder of the Roslyn Landmark Society. The Landmark Society played a crucial role in organizing and funding the restoration process. Now, thirty-five years later, the Milliken-Bevin Trellis is once again the focal point of a collaborative effort between the Roslyn Landmark Society and Nassau County Museum of Art.
During the event, guests enjoyed a cocktail reception held in the Nassau County Museum of Art's Formal Garden designed by Marion Coffin, one of the first female landscape architects. They were also treated to private after-hours tours of the former Frick estate mansion, Clayton, and current exhibitions on display. Jean Henning, who served as the Nassau County Museum of Art's Education Director for over twenty-five years, also graciously provided attendees with a bit of history related to the trellis during the festivities.
The Roslyn Landmark Society's Board of Trustees and staff extend their gratitude to the Nassau County Museum of Art Trustees, Executive Director Beth Horn, and the museum's staff for partnering with the Society on this wonderful event to benefit the continued preservation of this magnificent work of landscape architecture.
Special thanks also to Juliana Terian and Rallye Motor Company as well as Maria Babaev and LuxuryLongIsland.com for generous sponsorship of this event.
