A Serendipitous Journey Through Roslyn’s Galleries

ROSLYN, L. I. — A cold, biting breeze whipped in from the harbor inlet in Roslyn and a dozen ducks, looking for all the world at a distance like a string of (loosened pearls, bobbed on the waters of nearby sunlit Silver Lake.
Their feathers weren't the only ruffled things in town; some shop owners’ feelings appeared to be, too. Some rivalry and resentment was apparent — just a touch, mind you — between the relative newcomers, the young shop owners, and the older, firmly established ones.
For a few of the people who've lived and worked for about 30 years in this beautiful North Shore village, which has more than 100 pre‐Civil War buildings and retains a large amount of its historical character and early charm, say the young ones are changing the image of the town.
The young shop owners counter by saying that business was bad before they arrived because construction of a bridge overpass caused the rerouting of some traffic away from town. The young owners contend they are responsible for bringing in new customers to Roslyn.
But at the moment, everything seems peaceable in the small downtown business section on Old Northern Boulevard, Main Street and Tower Street where most of the town's 40 or so stores are centered.
A sight for sore eyes on a cold day is the window display at Casals’ Floral Art at 1372 Old Northern Boulevard. Gabriel and Marta Casals, who run the shop, specialize in original flower arrangements for parties and weddings and dried floral displays for private homes.
“We even match flowers to fabrics,” said Mr. Casals. “My wife makes some of the silk flowers herself. The real flower arrangements cost $15 and up.”
White ostrich plumes, pheasant feathers and dried flowers arranged in a milk white vase in the window cost $75 at Casals'. A blue wicker box holds pink, blue and yellow dried flowers and is $20.
The shop Is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 4 P.M.

Handcrafters Gallery was across from the Clocktower upstairs. It had the coolest handmade jewelry and belts and pottery etc. Great place . Ninas Place was on Main St and had the best shoes there was also the best pants store in town - lots of cool corduroy and denim.
Nina's was located at 21 Main Street (see photo on the William Valentine Emporium page)
Sirena Art Galleries looks awfully familiar but I cant place it.
Nice find, neat photos!
