Work continues at the Roslyn Grist Mill as craftsmen install custom window and door trim throughout the historic structure, and you can view an update on the progress here!
The trim is being fabricated from reclaimed Southern Yellow Pine salvaged from old buildings. More than 100 years old, this durable wood complements the character of the mill while honoring traditional building practices.
While the work may appear straightforward, each opening presents its own challenge. Over the centuries, the mill's timber frame has settled naturally, and the original posts were notched to receive the weatherboards. As a result, many of the window and door openings are no longer perfectly straight or square.
Fitting finished woodwork into these irregular openings requires careful measuring, custom fitting, and exceptional craftsmanship. The process takes longer than modern construction, but it ensures that the restored mill retains its historic authenticity while preserving the character of the original structure.
With the trim installation progressing, the team will soon be able to take final measurements for the shutters and doors, bringing another important phase of the restoration one step closer to completion.
