On September 21, 1938, one of the most powerful and destructive hurricanes hit Long Island and Southern Connecticut. Known as the "Long Island Express" and the "Great New England Hurricane of 1938", the storm moved at an amazing forward speed of 47 miles per hour.
As documented below in views from the Roslyn Grist Mill, the sustained hurricane winds and destructive storm surge caused major damage to the ships and piers along Hempstead Harbor Creek.
